Not all people know about the dark backside of the shoe industry, or more exactly the dirty tanning process in India and Pakistan virtually all major shoe brands use. In fact most shoe brands doesn’t know themselves. Recently though, the non profit watch dog organization of Swedish industry – Swed Watch, tracked down the origin of the big swedish shoe brands, and the results were… not nice at all, to put it brief. In their report they describe how people suffer from fatal diseases caused by chemicals, and bad working conditions in general. Also the local and global environment is heavily polluted in the same process.
This is the result of a shoe industry moving towards a “cheap stuff that break fast” type of business model. This is sad because this is an industry that used to stand for quality and durability. But it’s also sad because people don’t want shoes that break. The good news is however, it doesn’t have to be this way.

Inspired by people: “Shoes wear out to fast.”

Desired: Five shoemaker treatments included.
Ecosystem in mind
The production of the Shoes With A Cause is to be made with an entirely controlled ecosystem. In collaboration with Nyfiken Grön, a swedish ecosystem service agency, we have defined and tackled the biggest challenges. Vegetable tanning using tree bark used to be the choice back in the days. It’s rarely used today due to its tanning period of a few weeks (compared to a day with chromium sulfate), but makes excellent leather for shoes. Sustainable forestry and kettle keeping provides all the material needed. This way, in stead of turning natural materials into hazardous waste which is the case today, these shoes will be completely toxic free, and can even be dug down in the ground and return nutrients to the ecosystem. These shoes were made for keeping
The lifetime of these shoes will however be extended as much as possible. We designed them together with shoemakers – people with great knowledge of why and how shoes break. At the time of purchase, the customer also get a shoemaker deal, that allows him or her to get the shoes fixed at a discounted price five times during a ten year period (notice the five time repair detail under the sole).

In collaboration with shoemakers
These shoes wants to take a stand from the fast wear and tear system, but still come at a reasonable price. Classic hand made italian shoes would be very durable, but not many people are ready for that kind of price or commitment. These shoes offers a golden middle way, with a price and style for mass market, but more sustainable and durable than most neighbors on the shelf.
