Current problems for people

There’s a war going on in the living rooms of the world – the never ending battle between home electronics and interior design. It might be the huge TV that really doesn’t work with the nice old cupboard, or maybe the heaps of cables that for some reason needs to connect to our stereo system. Just making it all connect in the right way is tricky enough. Making it blend in often feels impossible unless we would build it into our walls. The thing is, hiding stuff behind walls is both expensive and difficult, and a lot of people actually want their hi-fi stuff to be visible. So we realized there are some improvements that should be made to this situation, and set out to meet the three following issues:

• People want music to sound good. How can we let the music equipment blend in nicely, while still be proudly perceived as high tech?

• These days people keep music in many different digital places. How can we allow people to play it without hassle or cables everywhere?

• Electronic waste is a huge environmental problem. How can we design something that doesn’t add to that huge landfill?

This speaker tries to answer all of the questions above.

How we designed it for people

The transparent design lets the speaker blend in to any living room out there. The size can be big enough to offer a good sound quality, yet the speaker takes little visible space. The box is transparent, but the sound creating components are clearly emphasized.

Usability

The speakers come with a small wifi antenna, that can plug in to any computer, music player or smart phone out there. It will also work for old stereos or vinyl equipment. The aim is to set the music free regardless where it’s stored.

Rechargeable WiFi antenna that plugs into any headphone socket

Sustainability

Being big is good for sound quality, but not so good for shipping. Any other speaker will ship a lot of air around the globe before ending up in your living room. This speaker ships in a small, flat package that goes in through your mailbox. The glass sheets making up the box is being ordered through the glass repair shop closest to every single customer. In that way the speaker reduces shipping with up to 90%, and supports local handicraft in one go. A very economical and ecological solution.

The speaker is then assembled at home, IKEA style. This also means that the components that breaks first (the rubber ring and the speaker cone) can be easily replaced, keeping the product away from any landfill.

A well established definition of sustainability is to satisfy the needs of people, planet and profit. Our speaker design tries to accomplish exactly that. Sounds great doesn’t it?

Update with some info: The speaker is still under development, and not available for purchase yet. If you are interested you can drop a mail to speaker[a]peoplepeople.se and we will keep you posted on the progress. Thanks! /Per

I guess I should have followed the links; it does go here! Per, that’s great you’re actually moving forward with this; it definitely made an impression when it first came out. I have to say I do prefer the first design though, but I understand the manufacturing difficulties. Perhaps a blend of the two, so that there is no need to cut glass for the sides.

1/4″ glass is actually pretty sturdy. 3/8″ would improve the sound even more.

I don’t think it’s aimed to please the Hi-Fi crowd but rather people who want something simple to use with everyday music devices and easy for their friends to share music in a social setting.  I do agree that a more serious sounding model with hi-end drivers and a powerful amp would be cool for those wanting both great aesthetics and killer fidelity.

Wow, you’re pretty stupid, aren’t you? How would the innovations of a Swedish company help the U.S. economy? How is Obama responsible for the current state of the U.S. economy when the bank collapse was during the Bush administration and the Republican filibusters are stopping Obama’s jobs bills?

The only thing you got right was that it’s a great idea.

this idea is crazy that I can’t even seem to think about  how did the idea started.
I am sure that if this product will come sooner or later, it will be a great threat for other companies.
this is the best among the best’s of the best’s!!!

I agree with some of the posters that acoustically this is a nightmare (can you say standing waves?)  Many transparent designs have been tried in the past and the more successful ones have been open designs.  That’s because glass and plexiglass are almost perfect reflectors and therefore awful for sound reproduction.  Perhaps if the glass was sculpted on the interior to disperse the standing waves if might work but then it wouldn’t be transparent.  Or if the glass were shaped to produce an infinite baffle but then it wouldn’t be easy to assemble.  I do like the idea of assembling the boxes yourself.  MDF is available just about anywhere also and works better for sound quality than plexiglass.  People have been building their own speakers for as long as I can remember.  What may be new with this design is that people will be inclined to build their own speakers, not for audio quality but because they are transparent (for SAF – Spousal Approval Factor)  and/or (debatably) have a lighter environmental footprint.

It does look good, but aesthetics isnt everything, has a industrial designer & sound engenier,  guys in a time that resources are scarce people should be educated to like durable products with most development possible, putting a glass box  with a speaker means shit loads of  vibrations & a extremely crappy bass & it will break in no time unless you do some serious development…..but hey it looks really good…baaahhhh!!!! This is a really crappy naive product…. i don´t like this at all!!

Any news? I hope that you are not giving up this great idea

  • Martin

What a load of crap! “Wire and hassle free” So what’s that wire doing dangling from it? WiFi transmitter antenna that’s re-chargeable, apart from the hassle of charging it how is that ecological. As for sourcing the glass locally to make it eco, the glass still has to be shipped to the local glass shop and the buyer has to drive to/from the shop so how is there any ecological benefit?

  • Dl241161

Holy frijoles. That looks incredible. I can’t wait to buy one when it comes out. Any idea when the first few products will be out on the market?

  • Hayneshg

This is a new twist on an old idea…i.e….SPEAKERLAB”…

  • http://twitter.com/ForCitySurfers CitySurfEssentials

It looks great – one thing I would mention though in your description above “This also means that the components that breaks first (the rubber ring and the speaker cone) can be easily replaced” it sounds like the product is destined to break – I’m sure its not meant to sound like that, but you should probably remove that bit, otherwise it sounds a bit like the rubber ring and cone are poor quality and sure to fail

Looking forward to seeing the final product though!

It’s unusual to see a speaker with no tweeter and a mid and bass unit sharing the same pressure box.
It’s also unusual to have a sealed box design with no standing wave absorption.
There are good reasons for this, I await the redesign with interest.
